The Government of Uruguay cuts energy bills to increase domestic exports

The Government of Uruguay cuts energy bills to increase domestic exports. The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), seeks to improve the competitiveness of the industrial sector and promote the use of installed capacity, in particular from renewable energy. These actions to support the industry complement the benefits for efficient and electro intensive industries.

Ms. Carolina Cosse, Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, announced this measure during the Council of Ministers held in the town of La Macana (Florida). On that occasion, the government described this action as “very good news for the industry” and added that “it is part of the innovative measures that we are taking forward linking production with energy benefits.”

The discount percentage will be calculated based on the percentage variation of the physical volume exported, with respect to the total physical volume sold of the company, and in relation to the same defined base period. The maximum discount percentage on the energy charge will be 25%.

The measure consists of a commercial discount in the invoicing for the charge of electric energy without VAT, based on the increase of the physical volume exported in a quarter with respect to a defined base quarter. It may be granted for an initial period of up to one year, and may be extended for another period equal as long as the conditions established by the MIEM are met.

Soon, an informative body will be invited to explain the application procedure for the benefit.
