The National Energy Council is currently working on a nuclear energy roadmap . The development roadmap of the Nuclear Power Plant has been specified in the National Energy General Design (RUEN) until 2050. Abadi Purnomo, member of the National Energy Board, stated that people do not have to worry about the existence of nuclear energy in Indonesia.
A nuclear power plant is capable of producing a capacity of 1,000-2,000 MW. The development of the nuclear power plant is nothing more than to meet the electricity demand in Indonesia which is expected in the future to increase rapidly. “No need to wait for the fossil energy to run out first to build a nuclear power plant, better prepared as early as possible,” he said.
He also explained that the road map of nuclear energy has been approved by President Joko Widodo in the plenary session of the three National Energy Council. “According to the plenary meeting, we should have built a nuclear power plant because it takes a long time, 7-10 years, in fact, the development of nuclear power plants up to 16 years,” he said.
In addition to building nuclear energy, he added, the development of EBT must also be driven massively. The National Energy Board continues to push its target of achieving new renewable energy projects (EBT) 23% through 2025. “We still encourage the development of EBT up to 23 percent until 2025. Indeed, one of the constraints related to funding with low interest rates,” he said.
However, he continued, the government is seeking a financial solution for funding the EBT project for developers. One of them is by inviting stakeholders such as the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to discuss the ease of funding the EBT project. OJK is also willing to make a memorandum of understanding. “Currently, there are only 13 companies submitting their profiles, they are generally concerned about high bank interest, we will forward the information to OJK and will be discussed together with OJK in determining the funding mechanism option,” he said.
Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the investment achievement of the EBT sector until April 2018 reached 14.7% of this year’s target. During January to March 2018, the realization of investment reached US $ 294 million. In fact, the target is US $ 2.01 billion. The biggest realization of investment came from geothermal of US $ 1.21 billion. Then, various EBTs were US $ 718 million, followed by bioenergy investments of US $ 72 million, and the last US $ 5 million came from energy conservation investments.
This year there will be 512 MW of EBT plant to be built. There are 11 priority areas of EBT development spread across Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, to Papua. Total EBT potential is around 225 Giga Watt (GW).
