For many years, China National Nuclear Corporation has been very active in Sudan. First on the ground with a proposal to export the ACP1000, then to reduce it to a 600 Mw, CNNC sent for many years its geological department to assess the site of the plant.
However, parallel to the Chinese activities, Russia has been also very active, with a proven technology and a strategy of localization and training that China still does not implement.
Last November, the Sudanese President Omar al – Bashir met Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to sign an agreement in the nuclear field. The document was signed between the CEO of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev and Sudan’s Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity , Moutaz Moussa Salim in Sochi.
The agreement includes the training of local expertise, the establishment a small floating nuclear plant of 8 Mw that will be stationed at Port Sudan, the construction of civil nuclear energy infrastructure, the possibility of building a nuclear science and technology center, then the construction of a 1200 MW nuclear power plant.
This agreement follows series of commercial agreements in the fields of agriculture, forestry, minerals and education and may be extended to the development of hydroelectric power with the use of dams on the Nile.
The main point of the Russian Sudanese connection is the offer to Russia to establish a military base in the red Sea and also to start purchasing Russian weapons.
