Turkey’s first solar power plant

Four joint venture groups participated in the Konya Karapınar Renewable Energy Resource Area (YEKA) solar power plant tender, which will be the largest solar energy plant project in Turkey.

These JV are Limak-CMEC-Haeron Solar Joint Venture, Kalyon-Hanwha Group, Çalık Enerji-Solargiga Joint Venture, AKC Solar Joint Venture Group.

The lowest bid per kilowatt-hour is $ 6.99 and comes from Kalyon and its South Korean partner Hanwha Group.

Within the scope of the project to be realized, a plant will be installed with a production capacity of 500 megawatts of photovoltaic module per year. With the condition of doing Research and Development (R & D) for ten years, a capacity of 1,000 megawatts shall be carried out at Karapınar YEKA. The goal is to have 60% localization for the first 500 megawatts and 70% of localization for the second 500 megawatt.

The photovoltaic modules will be  produced at the plant. The plant will be built in the 21 months after the contract.
The project expects to receive 1.3 billion dollars investment. 1.7 billion kWh of electricity will be generated from the plant and 600.000 households will benefit from it. In addition, Turkish engineers will work on the facility with a rate of 80%. Turkey, having the richest solar energy potential in Europe, will be thus able to make the transition to a low carbon economy.

The project aims to increase the production of renewable electricity and equipment, to transfer technology and to reduce the dependency on external sources.
Note: The foreign companies and their centers participating in the joint venture with Turkish companies are as following: CMEC-China, Hareon-China, Hanwha-South Korea, Solargiga-China, Acwa-Saudi Arabia, Chint Solar-China, Zhejiang Xiongtai Photovoltaic-China.
