When Westinghouse declared bankruptcy and was stripped from the assets of Toshiba, China did not wonder about its nuclear future and partnership with the USA. The nuclear industry is a strategic business, so China expects continuing to benefit from the United States expertise. The US will never give up when considering its national strategy or the energy strategy in this competition.
The AP1000 technology, but also the nuclear fuel, the equipment manufacturing, the operation and maintenance of a nuclear power plant, as well as the decommissioning and management of the nuclear facilities are not exclusively assets of Westinghouse.
Hundreds of accumulated years of experience belong to the overall American industrial, military and research consortium and nuclear technology is considered as the foundation of the country who promoted “Atoms for peace”.
The United States maintains its R&D ability and innovations in its nuclear business, such as the small reactors, to resume its leading position in the nuclear field.
The United States is determined to maintain and even expand its voice in the international nuclear power market. Although there was an obvious downturn in the market, some of the emerging countries are still interested in introducing different nuclear technologies to develop the nuclear, including the US AP1000, French EPR, ESBWR, ABWR, APWR, ARP1400 and Chinese Hualong No.1 and CAP1400 etc. Therefore the US government will not allow a foreign takeover of Westinghouse without its consent.
