The withdrawal of Turkish companies from negotiations to establish the first nuclear power plant in Turkey

Text: The two companies, “Calyon” and “Kolin Construction”, have withdrawn from the negotiations, with Russia’s energy firm “Rosatom”, on their participation in the construction of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu.

Roman Dikarov, public relations manager at Rosatom Overseas, – which is a company responsible for managing foreign projects for Rosatom-, has mentioned that the company is in negotiations with other potential partners, including the energy company EUAS.

Dikarov said that the withdrawal of the two companies would not affect their cooperation with Rosatom. He also said that the Russian company would continue its discussions with them based on their participation as a contractor to carry out construction work on the Akkuyu power plant project.

Rosatom initially agreed with the Turkish consortium in the summer of 2017 to sell a 49% stake in the company responsible for the implementation of the project, the value of the deal was not disclosed then, the agreement of their participation in the project was to be signed before the end of the year 2017.

Worth mentioning that, Akkuyu is the first project of its kind in Turkey, which includes the construction of 4 reactors with a capacity of 1200 megawatts each. The project would cost about $ 20 billion.

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant would save Turkey $ 14 billion worth of natural gas imports over the next 10 years.
