Workshop on Periodic Safety Review

The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organized a national workshop on “Periodic Safety Review (PSR) of Nuclear Installations/NPPs”, from July 30 to August 03, 2018 at PNRA headquarter, Islamabad under the IAEA TC Project Pak/2007 titled “Strengthening and Enhancing Capabilities of Pakistan’s Institutions to Support a Safe, Reliable and Sustainable Nuclear Power Program”.

PNRA conducts Periodic Safety Reviews (PSRs) of nuclear installations, as per requirement of Regulations PAK/909 and based on IAEA guidelines after every ten years in order to evaluate the safety of various important plant equipment’s against current safety standards and practices. This assessment includes review of operational history, ageing, actual equipment conditions, etc compared to the time of design/construction or previous review. On evaluation and satisfactory resolution of regulatory issues, the operating license is revalidated for further period. The aim of this workshop is to enhance the capabilities of participants in the regulatory requirements, different areas and methodology of review, discuss issues and share experiences.

Two experts from IAEA will be sharing their experiences with the participants, during the workshop. A total of 39 participants from PNRA and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) attended the workshop.
