10 reactors may be approved for construction in China

“China will continue to develop nuclear power on the premise of ensuring safety. This year, nuclear power projects will be continually approved for construction according to planning.” On April 1st, Liu Hua, deputy minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and director of the National Nuclear Safety Administration, said at China Nuclear Energy Sustainable Development Forum.

It is the first time to be officially confirmed that China’s new nuclear power projects will be launched within this year

During the meeting, Xu Yuming, deputy director of the Expert Committee of China Nuclear Energy Association, told the interface news that at least 10 units will be approved and will be open during the year.

Xu Yuming said that the approval of eight units is relatively clear. It includes two units of Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Phase I, two units of Huizhou Taipingling Nuclear Power Phase I which will use Hualong No.1 technology, and two units of Liaoning Xu Dabao Nuclear Power and Jiangsu Tianwan Nuclear Power, which will feature Russian VVER technology.

In addition, “Personally, Shandong Rongcheng Shidaowan nuclear power project using CAP1400 technology is also expected to be approved within the year.” He said.

Liu Baohua, deputy director of the National Energy Administration, said that China’s independent innovation of Hualong No. 1 and high-temperature gas-cooled reactor demonstration project are progressing smoothly and are expected to be completed and put into operation in 2020.

 

NβN tip: The Project Environmental Impact Report of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of P.R.C shows that Unit 1 of Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Plant and Unit 1 of Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant will start construction in June 2019. However, the time on the project environmental impact report is only the planning time. Only the final construction permit issued by NNSA,is the most important prerequisite for the nuclear power unit to start officially.
