The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced, on January 22nd, that 75 million safe working hours have been recorded in the Barakah Nuclear Power Plants Project, which reflects the corporation’s commitment to the highest safety, security and quality standards in developing the UAE peaceful nuclear program.
This came during an official ceremony held at the site of Barakah nuclear power project to celebrate this achievement.
“This achievement comes as a result of our well-established safety and security culture, and also affirms our unwavering commitment to adopting the highest international standards of safety, security, transparency and nuclear non-proliferation,” said Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC. He added that “thanks to our multiple safety programs and continuous learning, along with close cooperation with the main contractor and partner in the joint venture, the Korean Electric Power Company (KEPCO), we were able to achieve this major milestone in the field of safety and security.”
This achievement coincides with the progress of the operational preparations for the first unit in Barakah, which is conducted by the Nawah Energy Company, a subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Barakah npp.
It is expected to start loading nuclear fuel rods at the first unit during the first quarter of 2020, as soon as “Nawah” meets all requirements and obtains an operating license from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the regulatory authority responsible for regulating the nuclear sector in the UAE.
