In 2017, the electricity produced in Turkey was divided between natural gas (33.1%), hydropower (32%) and coal (21.9%, including 10,6% imported)). The remaining was solar, wind, geothermal and other sources.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources will add the domestic coal mines to the production of the existing fossil resources. Coal is used mostly in the field of conversion and electricity production (80%). Turkey currently imports half of the coal used in power plants.
The introduction of incentive mechanisms for the transformation of imported coal power plants into domestic coal-fired power plants will be important in the next months.
The incentive for clean coal technology in Turkey aims to reduce dependence on foreign energy. The country is also increasing the share of electricity production by renewable energy sources such as wind mills.
