French – Korean cooperation in nuclear technology

The South Korean Ministry of Science, Information Technology and Communications announced that it held the twenty-fourth session of the South Korean – French  Atomic Energy Joint Coordination Committee, with the French Atomic and Alternative Energy Authority; to discuss 27 technical cooperation agendas.

The cooperation frameworks covered three areas: nuclear research and development, nuclear safety, and the nuclear industry.

During the meeting, the two sides covered topics such as nuclear safety research, future nuclear technology, decontamination, nuclear fuel, radiation technology and nuclear fusion.

The two sides also agreed to adopt a “study on algorithms for prediction and diagnosis of problems that occurred in nuclear reactors while operating, using artificial intelligence (AI)” as a new agenda.

“France is a strong country in the field of nuclear energy, as it operates 56 commercial nuclear power plants and nuclear energy accounts for more than 70% of the total power generation in France,” said an official at the Ministry of Science, Information Technology and Communications. He added, “It is important to continue to maintain a cooperative relationship with the French side in order to develop technology in the field of safety and decommissioning of nuclear power plants, which is what South Korea is focusing on.”
