A Floating Nuclear Power Plant in Northern China

Nuclear heating is a major development opportunity in China, in particular in the Northeast. According to the “2017-2021 Winter Clean Heating Planning for Northern  China”, recently jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the National Energy Administration (NEA), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, by 2019, the proportion of clean heating in northern region will reach 50%, replacing almost 74 million-ton bulk coals; while by 2021, it will rise to 70%, taking the place of 150 million-ton bulk coals.

Ye Qizhen, a well-known Chinese nuclear power expert and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recently revealed at the “2018 Nuclear Power Industry Chain Summit Forum” that China’s first offshore ACP100 floating nuclear power plant will be built in Yantai, Shandong Province, for power generation, steam supply and desalination. The offshore floating nuclear power plant is a small modular reactor (SMR) and will be used for heating in Northeast of China.

According to official news, this ACP100 nuclear power plant has a total investment of 14 billion yuan (2 billion USD). The preliminary work already started this year. The reactor is expected to be in operation by 2021. The project developer is China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
