Bangladesh starts negotiations with Japan for a second nuclear power plant

Bangladesh signed a $12.65 billion contract with Russia on December 2015 for the construction of the first nuclear power plant at Rooppur (2400 MW). The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) started the discussions with Japan for the second nuclear power plant with Japan. China and South Korea expressed their interest to compete as well.

Mr. Yeafesh Osman, Minister of Science and Technology expressed the wishes to deal with the partner that guarantees the highest safety standards. The BAEC, the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited and the Public Works Department shortlisted eight sites under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Four sites are located in the district of Khulna, close to the Sundarbans, and the other four are located in Mazher Char in Barguna, Gangamati in Patuakhali, Boyar Char in Noakhali and Muhurir in Feni. The BAEC indicated the second nuclear power plant will use sea water for the cooling unlike Rooppur NPP.
