The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is preparing to establish two electricity plants using clean coal technology in the areas of Oyoun Mousa in Sinai and Al-Hamraween area in southern Safaga with a total capacity of 7,320 MW.
According to Dr. Ayman Hamza, the ministry’s spokesman, the ministry is on the verge of completion of the construction procedures. He pointed out that the financial and technical offers of the consortiums applying for the construction of Al-Hamraween plant are currently being evaluated. These consortiums include: the Japanese Mitsubishi, the Chinese Dongfang and Shanghai Electric, and GE (General Electric). The ministry will finish evaluating the bids for the station in March, as expected.
Hamza added that the consortium to win the contract to build Al-Hamraween power plant with clean coal technology, would be responsible for financing the construction of the plant. He said the ministry is aiming to complete the station and link it to the national electricity grid by 2025.
Hamza explained that Al-Hamraween station would be with a capacity of 6000 MW. While Oyoun Mousa station will be built through two stages of 660 MW per stage, adding that, the Egyptian Company for Electricity Transmission is still discussing with the consultant of the station to set the terms for investors’ applications.
