Deepening nuclear cooperation between South Korea and Russia

South Korea and Russia agreed on December 12th to expand bilateral cooperation in the nuclear energy industry, as they both seek to expand their overseas nuclear projects portfolio.

According to the South Korean News Agency (Yonhap), a South Korean delegation comprised of government and corporate officials met with officials from Russian enterprises in Moscow, including Rosatom, the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, as part of the delegation’s visit to Russia during the same week.

The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated that the Korean delegation called for deepening ties between the two countries at various levels of the nuclear energy industry.

Seoul and Moscow plan to hold working-level meetings to establish a platform through which government and private organizations of both countries could meet regularly to discuss details of cooperation.

This comes within the framework of South Korea’s plan to promote the exports of nuclear power plants, and it has already sent a delegation to the Czech Republic and Poland.

South Korea is seeking to sell its nuclear reactor model abroad, having successfully sold 4 units of the APR-1400 reactor to the United Arab Emirates, a pressurized water nuclear reactor, designed by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
