The head of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, “Atef Abdel Hamid”, said in a statement on the TV channel “DMC”, that the *”Anshas” nuclear reactor is used in Egypt to increase its production of radioisotopes and to meet the needs of the local medical and industrial market. He also added that there is a plan for the production of radioisotopes in quantities equivalent to 3 times the local needs, and for the opening of new export markets. He explained that the reactor provides 5 different types of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications, at prices less than half the price of imported radioisotopes.
“The Atomic Energy Authority will provide cadres, expertise and technical support to the Nuclear Stations Authority, which would be responsible for the operation of the Daba’a nuclear power plant,” Abdel Hamid said.
* Anshas nuclear reactor: Egypt imported the reactor from the Soviet Union in 1958, also known as the “Egypt’s Testing and Research Reactor”, the first nuclear reactor in Egypt. It is operated by the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA). The headquarter is based at the Nuclear Research Center in Anshas, 60 kilometers northeast of Cairo. The reactor has a capacity of 2 MW with an initial fuel load of 3.2 kg of uranium (U235) with enrichment of 10%.
