Forecasting of China’s Nuclear Power Industry in 2018-2022

Firstly–Favorable factors

(I) Market demand expanded

According to public documents such as Mid/Long-Term Nuclear Power Development Plan (2011-2020) and Strategic Plan of Action for Energy Development (2014-2020), by 2020, nuclear power installed capacity will be 58 GW while 30 GW kilowatts under construction. In terms of the technical route for the development of nuclear power, the newly-built domestic nuclear power projects during the 13th FYP period will mainly adopt the AP1000 and the “Hualong-1”. Whether it is the resumption of construction of new domestic nuclear power projects or the request by the “nuclear power going out” projects, the market demand for nuclear power valve equipment will be further stimulated. As new nuclear power projects are gradually put into commercial operation and more and more nuclear power plants are operating in China, the needs for Nuclear valve maintenance, repair and another spare parts service will also be gradually expanded.

(II) Powerful nuclear country

(III) Promote the safe and efficient development of nuclear power and continue to develop advanced technologies

On November 9, 2017, “2017 Nuclear Power Industry Chain Summit and National Nuclear Industry Innovation Platform Inauguration Ceremony ” was held in Yantai, Shandong Province. The forum focused on “diversified applications of nuclear energy”. Nearly 400 delegates from nuclear power equipment manufacturing enterprises attended the forum including Shandong University, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, China National Nuclear Industry Corporation, State Power Investment Group and the National Energy Administration, China Nuclear Industry Association, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Shandong Provincial Development and Reform Commission. All delegates reached a consensus at the meeting: While promoting the safe and efficient development of nuclear power, they will also actively promote the application of nuclear energy and nuclear technology in heating, hydrogen production, seawater desalination, green electric vehicles, Medical, environmental protection and other aspects.

Secondly–Unfavorable factors

(I) Technology monopoly

(II) shortage of talent

In terms of talent, nuclear power belongs to technology-intensive industry and needs a team of professionally trained human resources. Therefore, it is necessary to train qualified personnel so as to lay the foundation for the subsequent larger-scale development.

China’s nuclear power generation forecast

From January to December 2016, China’s nuclear power generation amounted to 212.73 TW, increasing by 24.1% over the same period of last year; from January to September 2017, nuclear power generation amounted to 183.43 TW, growing 18.8% over the same period of last year. We expect China’s nuclear power generation to reach 299.7 TW by 2018, a CAGR of approximately 17.5% over the next five years (2018-2022) and 5,694 TW of nuclear power by 2022.
