India restricts mining rights

The Indian government has prohibited the mining of nuclear minerals by private entities. Only state-run companies have operating rights to “safeguard” the country’s strategic interests.

The nuclear minerals zirconium, monazite and thorium are found in abundance in many beaches in the country. The notification states that zirconium, hafnium, and thorium are essential strategic elements used in various phases of the country’s nuclear power program.
