Israeli gas for Europe

Israel’s large natural gas reserves in Leviathan and Tamar (10 billion cubic meters of gas per year from 2019), can be transferred to the international market. An agreement was signed in September with the “Noble” energy company to export natural gas from Leviathan to Jordan. This will be Israel’s first natural gas sale to another country from the Leviathan area.

According to the European Commission, the Eastern Mediterranean Natural Gas Line, which is still in the planning phase, is expected to carry 16 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe. The European Commission has adopted a “Common Interest Project” with Israel and committed to provide US$ 5.7 billion through some potential itineraries:

  • The futur natural gas pipeline from Israel to Ceyhan combined with TANAP (Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project) and TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) will transport the gas to Europe. Eilat-Ashkelon pipe line company (EAPC), Israeli pipeline operator expects a natural gas pipeline of 500 km from Turkey to Israel to cost approximately 2,5 billion USD and to be completed in one and a half year.

  • The project of the Eastern Mediterranean Pipeline, from Leviathan to Cyprus and then to Crete and Greece. This line could be profitable through the development of technology and revolve of the Cypriot political problem.
