ITER: first purchase of Chinese equipment

This is the first purchase of Chinese equipment for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (*ITER). The Organization signed a contract for the design and supply of the steam condenser with a consortium that includes China Nuclear Power Engineering (CNPE) and Suzhou Tianwo Technology Co., Ltd., also known as ”Zhangjiagang Chemical Machinery Factory”. The steam condenser for the ITER project was procured through an open bidding process. The contract signing marks the first deal made by a Chinese enterprise on the ITER project.

By the recommendation of the ITER organization under China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, CNPE took the lead to establish the consortium participating in the international bid and beat various strong competitors, including the US, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia and India.

*ITER:Based in southern France’s Cadarache, the ITER project is one of the most ambitious projects in the world. Altogether 35 nations jointly invested a total amount of 15 billion euros ($16.41 billion) in building the world’s largest tokamak, a “Man-made sun・ which is a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy.
