A recent International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) review recommend to the Chinese Authorities to speed up the adoption of the Nuclear Safety Act, to design a long-term policy for the radioactive waste, and to improve the research on nuclear waste recycling.
Mr. Liu Hua, chief engineer of nuclear security at the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), states that China is focusing on a longer-term vision for the waste disposal based on the previous 10-year plan. He added the central government is determined to solve the disposal problems of the low and intermediate-level waste (LLW) with eight coastal provinces that use nuclear projects. China will carefully plan and overall consider the disposal site selection, the safety of the operation, and the long-term monitoring.
Within five to ten years, China will build an underground laboratory to deal with the high-level radioactive waste, and under the authority of the MEP in order to tighten the management of radioactive waste.
