The Russian state-owned company, Rosatom, is in talks with Saudi Arabia on the possibility of building nuclear reactors with small capacities in the Kingdom. “We are in discussions about low capacity reactors”, said the Director General of Rosatom, Alexei Lekachev, on Monday, April 15th, 2019.
It is noteworthy that in June 2018, Rosatom was included in the final list of competitors for building the first nuclear power project in Saudi Arabia. And the Government of the Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
On October 5th, 2017, Rosatom and King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) signed an agreement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. According to the program, Russia and Saudi Arabia plan to cooperate in the areas of small and medium-sized reactors, nuclear infrastructure development and the prospect of establishing a nuclear science and technology center in Saudi Arabia, based on a similar Russian research reactor.
