Nuclear agreement between China and Sudan

The Republic of Sudan, represented by the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity (WRE), and the Ministry of Oil (MOP), Gas and Minerals signed with the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), on Thursday (October 20th), a framework agreement for the development of bilateral relations in the field of nuclear power generation as well as Development of uranium mining.

The agreement included providing support to Sudan in the stage of preparatory activities for the construction of the first nuclear plant in Sudan (training of human resources and site studies), and also discussed the field of uranium exploration in Sudan.

The signing of the agreement was part of the China’s “Belt and Road” Summit on October 18th, 2018, to which China invites the world’s top energy officials and a number of diplomats.

Negotiations with China on Sudan’s nuclear project began in 2012 as part of a strategic partnership between the two countries in the fields of development projects in the country, as the People’s Republic of China is one of the largest manufacturers of nuclear power plants.

The signing was signed on behalf of the Sudanese side by Engineer Musa Omar Abu Al Qassim, Director General of the Dam Implementation Unit and Chairman of the executive Committee of the Sudanese Nuclear Program, while the Director General of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) signed on behalf of the Chinese side. The signing was attended by Eng. Abdullah Al-Maqli, General Manager of the Electricity Holding Company, and Advisor Mohammad Salah Al-Din at the Sudanese Embassy in Beijing.
