Since 2015, Russia officially declared it intends to set up two nuclear power units of VVER-type, with a capacity of 1000MW-1200MW each in Laos. This plan is part of Rosatom expansion in South East Asia, including Vietnam.
Laos seeks to export power to adjacent nations, including Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.
The Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Sinava Souphanouvong announced that Singapore was in talk with Laos for the purchase of nuclear electricity.
The planned facilities are likely to be built under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) approach.
Laos presently has a production capacity of 8GW. Over 80 projects are under construction in the country, which is likely to increase its capacity by 14 GW.
The firm has already signed an agreement to supply up to 5GW of power to Vietnam. Energy export from the country to Thailand is expected to go up to 10GW.
In Vietnam, the Nuclear power project of Ninh Thuan was a central subject of the biannual conference on Nuclear Science and Technology in Da Nang, which was introduced by Mr. Tran Viet Thanh, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology. The country is looking to improve several fields in the nuclear, including education, safety, and radiation protection in order to prepare the construction of the plant.
