Rosatom in Saudi Arabia

Rosatom was included in the shortlist for the next stage of the tender for the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Saudi Arabia. Rosatom applied to participate in the tender for the construction of two VVER-1200 reactors.

Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy of Saudi Arabia signed, on October 5th2017, in Moscow, a program of cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

The head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, has previously announced, within the framework of the Russian Energy Week, that Saudi Arabia began the process of selecting a company for the construction of the first large-block nuclear power plant in the country.

Energy Minister Alexander Novak said, at a meeting of the intergovernmental commission of Russia and Saudi Arabia, on November 2nd2017, in Riyadh, that Rosatom is interested in creating a nuclear infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including the construction of 16 nuclear power units.

A winning tender is expected to be chosen in 2019. Earlier it was reported that Saudi Arabia expects that the results will be announced this year.
