Rosatom’s strategy in Saudi Arabia

In June 2015, Russia and Saudi Arabia signed six cooperation. The agreements were signed after the visit of Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz and his meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantin Palace in St. Petersburg.

The list of agreements may indicate how the Saudis are moving away from the US, as its traditional ally in Washington agreed on the new Iranian nuclear program.

According to the Russian government, this signature was the first legal framework for cooperation between both nations in the field of nuclear energy, Space exploration (between Roscosmos, and Saudi national center for science and technology KACST), transport (upgrade of existing railways and participation to the construction of underground railways in four cities), pharmaceutical, oil and gas (Saudi Arabia is the top producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the world’s top oil exporter, while Russia is the second biggest oil supplier).

Future joint projects in the nuclear energy field might include construction of nuclear power plants, supply of services in nuclear fuel, including for nuclear power plants and research reactor facilities.
