Saudi’s first nuclear reactor

King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable energy (K.A. CARE) announced the partnership with the Korean Nuclear Energy Research Institute to develop the technology of a small compact nuclear reactor – Smart technology, to transfer the technology and to commission it as Saudi’s first nuclear reactor.

Last week, the technical specifications for the contractors were dispatched, to ensure the completion of the project in a timely manner. This meeting was held in Korea with the companies involved in the engineering design of the future Saudi’s reactor.

A technical team is working side by side with the Korean institute to run the project, from training stage to participation in the engineering designs of the reactor.  The reactor will be used at first for the purpose of producing power and desalinization.

K.A. CAREs’ ultimate goals are to acquire nuclear knowledge, to create a local supply chain and to export the reactor.
