Successful completion of major concrete structural processes in Barakah

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has achieved a successful completion of the major concrete construction operations, the main construction of the turbine generator and the components of the internal reactor container at the third unit of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plants project, which is being developed in the Dhafra area of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

These achievements pave the way for the cold tests and operational preparations at the plant. The completion of the main construction operations at the third unit comes after one year of completion at the second station and two years after completion in the first station. Which shows the importance of the development of four identical units at the same time.

The teams will move from the construction of the third station to the fourth to apply all the experiences and lessons learned during the stages of operations In the three previous stations.

Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, declared: “The series of achievements achieved in the major construction operations at the third station demonstrates the commitment of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) to maintain the highest standards of quality, safety and security during all stages of development. The project also confirms the continued efforts of the Foundation to establish new standards for the efficiency and quality of projects of peaceful nuclear power plants around the world”.

Al Hammadi added that these achievements are the result of fruitful cooperation between ENEC and Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), the main contractor and partner in the joint venture, as well as sub-contractors such as Hyundai and Samsung.

The third unit is currently connected to the transport network of the company of Abu Dhabi for Transport and Control “Transco” after the success of the operation of “backup power generators” and “backup power transformers” within the facilities of the third unit in the project.

By the end of May 2018 , the construction operations was completed by 93%  Unit 2, 83% in Unit 3, and 72% in Unit 4. The total achievement of the project reached more than 89%.

The construction phase of the first station has been completed, and efforts are now focused on the stage of operational preparations in order to obtain a license to operate the plant from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.
