Sudan energy market

Three months ago, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) listed Sudan as one of the best destinations countries in Africa to invest in renewable energies such as solar and wind. According to IRENA, Ethiopia ranked first in Africa with 4188 MW per year, followed by South Africa with 4064 MW, and Sudan has a capacity of 1793 MW.

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning in Sudan signed a loan agreement for the financing of the circular electricity line project around Khartoum for 199 million USD, with the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, with a repayment period of 30 years and a grace period of 7 years.  The government announced in September its plan to increase solar and wind power in the energy market, and to produce about 1000 MW of electricity next year. This investment in Sudan energy market will increasing the electricity capacity to 5,520 MW by 2020.

In other energy markets, Sudan is currently preparing to operate the third Qari power plant in May, the country’s second largest power plant after the Merowe dam. The plant will reach 935 MW. The first unit will be operational by the end of this year and the second unit will be operational in January and the third in March. The Klanip thermal power plant will enter the production cycle in May next with a capacity of 187 MW. Two power plants in the Qary Free Zone and Port Sudan have been completed, including the main port and free trade zone on the Red Sea coast. The two plants are 850 megawatts and are powered by Siemens. Both stations entered in service in June.
