Technical Cooperation between Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission and Universidad de Playa Ancha

Recently, the rector of the University of Playa Ancha (UPLA), Patricio Sanhueza Vivanco, and the executive director of the Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission (CCHEN), Jaime Salas Kurte, signed five years framework cooperation agreement in the technical cooperation of civil nuclear applications.

Jaime Salas hopes this cooperation will boost scientific research and technological development. The CCHEN will make available knowledge, capabilities, infrastructure, and equipment to carry out R&D activities under the framework of the peaceful use of nuclear applications in human health, mining, agriculture, industry, food, environment, and physical sciences with CCHEN.

The rector Patricio Sanhueza Vivanco thanked the efforts made by the dean (s) of the Faculty of Engineering, Verónica Meza Ramírez, who will be responsible for ensuring compliance with this agreement.

CCHEN will collaborate in the investigation of the properties of the Sarcocornia neei plant in Puchuncaví, to confirm whether this technique allows them to increase their capacity to absorb heavy metals in contaminated soils.

The UPLA researcher said that in a second stage, the availability and total concentration of metals in contaminated soils could be analyzed and compared, based on the studies carried out by the Department of Environment of the Faculty of Engineering, directed by Eva Soto Acevedo. The CCHEN would add geologists working in metal expertise.
