Transfer or nuclear technology between Russia and Algeria

Last October, Dmitry Medvedev began Monday a two-day official visit to Algeria at the invitation of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia. This visit, which comes after the holding of the 8th Joint Commission for Cooperation in September 2017, was an opportunity for both countries to deepen and consolidate their strategic dialogue and cooperation based on the Declaration of Partnership concluded at Moscow in April 2001, between the two presidents Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Algeria and Russia signed five partnership, cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding in Algiers on the occasion of the two-day official visit to Algeria of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. Signed in the presence of the Prime Minister, Ahmed Ouyahia, and his Russian counterpart, as well as several ministers of the two countries, these agreements include, among others, civilian nuclear energy.

A memorandum of understanding for the transfer of nuclear technology has been signed between the Atomic Energy Commission (Comena) and the Russian company RosAtom, and initialed by the Algerian Commissioner for Atomic Energy, Nasreddine Djeghri, and Rosatom Vice President Nikolay Spaski.

Algeria has already the 15 MW Ain Oussara nuclear reactor built by China National Nuclear Cooperation.
