Turkey turns to Rolls-Royce for SMRs

British company Rolls-Royce has announced signing a deal with Turkey to produce small modular nuclear reactors (SMR).

The company has signed an MoU, as a member of a consortium, with the Turkish contractor EUAS International ICC to assess the technical, economic and legal feasibility and implementation potential of power plants using small nuclear reactors (SMR).

The consortium comprises Assystem, Atkins, BAM Nuttall, Laing O’Rourke, National Nuclear Laboratory, Jacobs, The Welding Institute and Nuclear AMRC.

This power plant is “affordable, fast to deploy and is an attractive investment, and will help create jobs for tens of thousands of people in the region,” said Rolls-Royce consortium director, David Orr.

Yahya Yilmaz Bayraktarli, CEO of the Turkish company, in turn, described the signing of the memorandum of understanding as an exciting development, and said: “The consortium looks forward to supporting Turkey’s energy, economy and industry goals.”
