US restriction of nuclear sales to China, so what?

Last year, the U.S. exported only for USD 170 million in nuclear technology to China. The recent US restriction of nuclear sales to China, have no real impact, except in the media.

Since the nineties, the U.S. share of the international nuclear energy market has fallen to 20% from 90% over the last 30 years, and the last major technology deal was the acquisition of the AP1000 more than ten years ago. The localization rate for the AP1000 reached its pick and the nuclear sales to China from US companies is shrinking yearly. A strategy of continuous and mandatory transfer of know-how to Chinese companies was initiated since the last decade by Westinghouse, with the support of  Lockheed Martin, EMD, Flowserve, Lewa & Moyno, Fisher, Invensys, L3…

Westinghouse is being pushed out the Chinese market, and even the international market, such as in Turkey, where SPIC plays alone.

The US restriction of nuclear sales to China may slow down the ACPR50S expansion in the south china sea. This floating reactor was initiated by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation’s No.719 Research Institute (CSIC), and co-founded by Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC), CGN Technology Research Institute (CNPRI) and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

However other competitors, during the 2018 European Naval Exhibition at the Bourget Exhibition Center in France ( October 23-26) are already taking their seat for business. He Jiwu, deputy general manager of CSIC met the R&D representatives from Thales Group, ThyssenKrupp, and Fincantieri to understand their development in marine defense equipment and military-civilian integration. The meeting with Privinvest was especially noted due to the company’s extensive experience in the provision of technology transfer services.

Note: CSIC and NPIC are among the leading companies in the Chinese civil and military program.

NβN tip: In order to approach the Chinese officials go to overseas exhibitions, They are usually more relax and stay in the hotel of the event. You may not have much time, but you will have direct access.
