Last February, the president of Eletronuclear, Leonam dos Santos Guimarães and Westinghouse signed a letter of intent (LOI) to extend the operating life of the Angra 1 plant for another 20 years. The company delivered the LOI to the National Nuclear Energy Commission (Cnen).
The US Secretary of Energy, Dan Brouillett, and the Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, Bento Albuquerque, attended the ceremony. Dan Brouillete declared that there is an interest in the American industry in participating in the construction of eventual new nuclear plants and projects of exploration of uranium, a today state monopoly.
The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities (Abdan) signed another memorandum of understanding that expands bilateral cooperation.
The delegation included representatives from the Energy and International Trade departments of the United States, the NIS, Framatome, Westinghouse, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Holtec, among others. The group visited the offices of Nuclear Industries of Brazil (INB) and Nuclep, in Rio.
