Iraqi – Jordanian cooperation in the field of nuclear energy

The Chairman of the Jordanian Atomic Energy Authority, Dr. Khalid Toukan, and the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Science and Technology, Dr. Qusai Abdul-Wahab Al-Suhail, signed on Saturday, August 24th, a protocol of cooperation in the field of research on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the production of radioisotopes from the Jordanian research and training nuclear reactor.

This protocol provides an opportunity to train and prepare Iraqi cadres in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The Iraqi minister Qusai Al-Suhail, expressed Iraq’s readiness to “cooperate in the fields of exporting radioactive iodine-131 to be used for diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine in the form of solution or capsules and with the radioactivity required.”

For his part, Toukan described the step as “positive”; as it establishes cooperation between the two countries in the short and medium term in the field of the use of nuclear energy. He also pointed out to the importance of strengthening cooperation in all fields, including providing the Iraqi market with medical and industrial radioisotopes to support nuclear applications in the fields of medicine, agriculture, water and industry in Iraq.
