KHNP and Nawah Energy Company Cooperation

Kwan-Sup Lee, the President of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Mohammed Sahoo Al Suwaidi, the acting CEO of the Emirati Nawah Energy Company (a company created by  Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation “Enec” and Korean Electric Power Company “Kopec”) signed a cooperation agreement to share the experience of operating the Korean-designed APR1400 nuclear power reactors on 8th June 2017.

The APR1400 reactors had been operating in South Korea since 2015. As the UAE plans to build four reactors of the type by 2020, the agreement may extend to include maintenance experience, the sharing of “urgent materials”, and the joint purchase of spare components.

In a statement, a KHNP spokesperson said, “The signing of the agreement has created a foundation for APR1400 power plants [in both countries] to improve safety, reliability, efficiency and joint issues.”

These APR1400 are highly advanced pressurized water reactors. They will be used in the Barakah site nuclear project in the UAE, which is conducted by Eneco and Kopec.

Nawah Energy Company has been created to be a joint company between the Emirati Eneco and the Korean Kopec to build the four Emirati reactors by 2020.
